The Middle East Studies Program at the University of Vermont is an interdisciplinary program that brings together faculty from across the College of Arts and Sciences who have a research and teaching interest in the Middle East or topics related to the region.

A minor academic concentration in Middle East studies is available to undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences.  Many students in various departments and colleges also take courses on the Middle East, fulfilling various college and departmental requirements, without formally declaring Middle East studies as their minor.

The Middle East Studies Program sponsors lectures and cultural events on campus related to the region.  Please call the Global and Regional Studies office at the University of Vermont (802-656-1096) for information on upcoming events.

Middle East Studies Courses for Spring 2010

Middle East Studies Faculty

MIDDLE EAST MINOR REQUIREMENTS

To obtain a minor in Middle East studies students must take eighteen hours (six courses) related to the Middle East.

All students pursuing the minor must take History 45 and History 46.

The remaining four courses can be chosen from the list of Middle East-related courses below.  Students can also propose other courses with sufficient Middle East content to fulfill the requirements.  The director of the program must approve any course not listed before it can be considered to fulfill the requirements for the minor.

Completion of the College of Arts and Sciences Students language distribution option in any language or transfer equivalent credits in a Middle Eastern language from another institution or program to receive the minor in Middle East Studies.  Hebrew and Arabic are the only Middle Eastern languages offered at the University of Vermont.  The Middle Eastern Studies Program strongly recommends that students develop a familiarity with at least one Middle Eastern language (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish), but does not require that for the minor.  Of the European languages, French is the most useful for students who are interested in the study of the modern Middle East.  However, students who wish to minor in Middle Eastern studies may fulfill the language requirement in any language.  Courses taken to fulfill the language requirement, not in a Middle Eastern language, will not count toward the eighteen hours of credits required for the minor.
