INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Internships can be a rewarding way to fulfill academic credits while you are an undergraduate, or an amazing post-graduation experience. But meaningful internships are not always easy to come by, and it usually takes some hard work to find the right opportunity.

You should start your search with a visit to UVM Career Services (http://www.uvm.edu/~career/).
Our Career Services office maintains a useful list and many links to resources related to internships abroad. Make an appointment with a counselor to find out how to use these resources. They will also supervise internships for credit.

Also, visit the UVM Office of International Education (http://www.uvm.edu/~oies).
Like Career Services, OIE has useful information on internships abroad, with an emphasis on internships for credit. You should make an appointment to meet with a Study Abroad Advisor several semesters in advance of the time you want to be interning abroad.

The following website may be helpful if you are planning to travel or live in the European Union:

“The Hottest International Internships” List
(http://content.monster.com/articles/3471/19180/1/factor/12/home.aspx)
This list, found on Monster.com, is a useful compendium of interesting internship opportunities abroad. It also has advice on how to get an internship abroad.

By searching the internet, you will find many links to organizations that provide internship opportunities abroad. As a program, we do not recommend any single organization above any others, although some of our faculty and students might have specific recommendations.

If we can offer any general advice, it is “buyer beware.” Many of these organizations charge fees to set up an internship, and the internships they provide are not always the meaningful experience you dreamed about. Before you commit to any specific program, get the perspectives of your academic advisor, other faculty members, students who have done internships abroad, and the staff members at UVM’s Office of International Education and Career Services office.
