ESRI is to GIS as Microsoft is to operating systems, but
there are alternatives for Desktop GIS. Unlike ArcGIS, some of
the alternatives run on other platforms (Mac, Linux....). As
ArcGIS is "free" for UVM affiliates, we do not see other GIS
applications in use very much at UVM. Exceptions to this
observation are Google Earth and other so-called globe viewers, which
have broad public appeal for map browsing but very limited
functionality for spatial analysis. Let us know if you are using
