Sheldon George

Film and Television Guest Speaker

Associate Professor of English and Director of the Graduate English Program at Simmons College in Boston, Sheldon George came to UVM in November, 2014. He gave a talk based on his forthcoming book "Trauma and Race: A Lacanian Study of African-American Identity." He explained American racism in terms of white anxiety about black enjoyment, and he traced this anxiety in a variety of contemporary events, focusing especially on recent acts of racist violence in the state of Florida.  Three Film and Television Studies classes came together to hear George's presentation, and many of the students drew on what George had to say in their final papers.  His book will appear in 2015 from Baylor University Press.
