THE FLEMING MUSEUM PRESENTS
FLEMING MUSEUM PUBLISHES NEW CATALOGUE TO ACCOMPANY THE EXHIBITION NEW TURF
(AVAILABLE JULY 6)

Burlington, VT - The exhibition New Turf will be accompanied by a 52-page catalogue that features an essay by the exhibition's curator, Evelyn C. Hankins, as well as biographical information about the artists and color reproductions of selected works. The catalogue will be available through the Museum when the exhibition opens on July 6.

On July 6, 2005, the Fleming Museum opens New Turf, a major contemporary art exhibition that brings together 15 artists from Vermont and across the nation who draw inspiration from the rural, urban, and suburban environments of America. Additionally, it is the first major exhibition curated by Evelyn C. Hankins, the Museum's Curator of Collections and Exhibitions. "Living in Vermont, you can't help but be impacted by the landscape, which comprises a complex mixture of natural and manmade environments. I became curious as to how contemporary artists were engaging with what is a rapidly changing American scene." Hankins holds a Ph.D. in Art History from Stanford University, where her primary field was 20th-century American and European art. Before joining the Fleming Museum, she worked for the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.

Featuring works ranging from aerial photographs of environmentally impacted sites and pencil drawings charting the layout of suburban "big-box" stores to paintings offering rigorous, formal explorations of nature's light, color, space, and mood, New Turf maps the diverse terrain where landscape and abstraction meet. Exhibited artists include Anne Appleby (Jefferson City, MT); Louise Belcourt (Brooklyn, NY); Janice Caswell (Brooklyn, NY); Marsha Cottrell (New York, NY); Jane Fine (Brooklyn, NY); Tom Fruin (Brooklyn, NY); Richard Garrison (Delmar, NY), John Hudak (Dobbs Ferry, NY), McKendree Key (b. Brattleboro, Vermont; currently lives in Brooklyn, NY); Marie Krane/Cream Co. (Chicago, IL & Snowmass Village, CO); Sandy Litchfield (Amherst, MA); David Maisel (Sausalito, CA); Sam Prekop (Chicago, IL); Lordy Rodriguez (Los Angeles, CA); and Gail Salzman (Fairfield, VT).
