Ten Vermont Women: Sculpture, Painting, Craft
July 13 - September 7, 2003
Organized by the Fleming Museum, this exhibition features the work of ten Vermont women artists who
were selected as finalists for the National Museum of Women in the Arts' (NMWA) From the States program.
From this group of ten, curators from NMWA selected one artist, Elizabeth Billings, to represent Vermont
at the NMWA in Washington, D.C. from March 1-May 30, 2003. The From the States program, which operates
on a rotating basis, enables NMWA's state committees to bring one artist from their state to greater
public attention in the nation's capital. The Fleming exhibition will present the work of all ten
finalists to the Vermont public during the summer of 2003. The exhibition features sculpture, painting,
and crafts, and includes the work of Elizabeth Billings, Tunbridge; Patricia Burleson, Townshend;
Kathryn Lipke Vigesaa, Waterville; Janet McKenzie, Island Pond; Lynn Newcomb, Worcester; Sue Rees,
N. Bennington; Kathleen Schneider, Winooski; Meg Walker, Charlotte; Dana Wigdor, Brattleboro; and
Barbara Zucker, Burlington.
The artists included in the exhibition work in a wide range of mediums and styles and many of them
exhibit their work nationally. Sculptor Barbara Zucker has recently completed a series of wall- mounted
works based on the expressive line patterns from the faces of women friends and women she admires.
Meg Walker's sculpture focuses on model-scale barn structures inspired by her travels in Scotland.
Elizabeth Billings weaves wall pieces from organic materials such as pine needles and small branches,
and painter Dana Wigdor depicts monochromatic Vermont landscapes with sci-fi structures hovering in
winter skies. Portrait painter Janet McKenzie who attracted international attention for her award-winning
painting Jesus of the People, will exhibit recent work.
The exhibition is co-sponsored by the Vermont committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
The talks by artists are co-sponsored by the Women's Center at the University of Vermont.
