Real Democracy
The "Unexpurgated" version (URD) of

Real Democracy:
The New England Town Meeting and
How it Works

Below is a table that provides access to the original manuscript for Real Democracy. I call it The Unexpurgated Real Democracy (URD).* It contains one chapter that was cut in its entirety from the final version of the book – "Above the ‘Optimal Climatic Area’" (treating the history of Vermont as it cradled the development of town meeting there). The table lacks the book’s Chapter 10 (“If You Build It, Let Them Play”) and the Conclusion, “A Lover’s Quarrel,” which were written for the final version. This material in the URD has the obvious copyright protections. I am making it available primarily because it extends substantially the evidentiary base of Real Democracy. It would please me immensely if scholars referenced some of the material in the URD. But remember:  the URD is  fundamentally a draft. I am still cleaning up the bibliography and please cut me some slack on the prose. Although I am confident the empirical displays are sound, if something seems out of whack in a table or figure, give me a call. Finally if you would like me to reconstruct any of the tables or figures from the original data for you, I’d be happy to do so.

* The original acronym for The Unexpurgated Real Democracy was TURD. But Melissa made me change it.
