The ad hoc General Education Committee was formed after the May 2011 Senate meeting, which approved a motion to create such a committee to work in consultation with the Provost's office to continue the work on general education. The committee was charged to:
- Refine the outcomes as needed
- Inventory current offerings and determine where and to what extent the proposed outcomes are already being achieved
- Draft phased implementation and assessment plans
- Determine resources needed to implement the plans
- Plan faculty development opportunities and incentives for course and curriculum design & outcomes assessment
- Make a detailed recommendation to the Faculty Senate for implementation and assessment
With the agreement of the Executive Committee, the General Education Committee is focusing its work first on writing and information literacy. The work of the Joint Committee on General Education in 2010-11 reveals broad support across campus for concerted attention to student writing. The committee hopes, by focusing its work on one outcome, to model a process that can be used to address the other areas of general education as well as to produce an implementation and assessment proposal that will be welcomed by the Senate.
