Description of Laboratory Safety Trainings
The information covered in our Environmental Safety training is specific to UVM, but applies to UVM labs in general. To be complete, specific safety training in the procedures used in each laboratory must be provided by the laboratory supervisor or Laboratory Safety Officer.
New Employee Training
Introductory laboratory safety training is provided for people new to UVM laboratories. There are two components to the introductory training:
-
New employees complete online training as outlined in the table above before being exposed to hazards in the laboratory. This training reviews basic terminology associated with laboratory hazards and describes UVM procedures related to chemical safety, disposal of hazardous wastes, the hazards and precautions associated with human blood and body fluids and other subjects.
-
New employees then attend classroom Laboratory Emergency Prevention and Response within 3 months of the start of their employment. This training discusses emergency response at UVM as well as how to prevent laboratory emergencies. The schedule for this training can be found on our class training registration page.
- Laboratory Supervisors and Laboratory Safety Officers attend further classroom training on laboratory safety issues, including biosafety (for BSL 2 laboratories), fume hoods and biosafety cabinets, and management of laboratory waste. Other laboratory workers are welcome to attend these sessions as well.
| |
In addition, to finish introductory safety training which meets OSHA and EPA requirements new laboratory workers must receive specific training on the hazards in their laboratory (visit this page for guidelines for what this training should cover and resources available to support this training).
Laboratory Safety Officer Training
Managing Laboratory Wastes at UVM
This training is required for all Lab Safety Officers and Supervisors that use chemicals in the lab but all laboratory personnel are welcome. Come review the proper waste disposal procedure for chemical waste, including proper labeling, storage and tagging. Come find out why the waste information you provide to us is so important. You will also see where your waste goes for final end disposal.
Keeping Your Lab Safe
This training is required for all Lab Safety Officers and Supervisors that use chemicals in the lab but all laboratory personnel are welcome. Monthly Laboratory Self Inspections are the foundation of responsible lab work. This 45 minute discussion will address the major requirements within the Self Inspection form and includes examples of when things look good, and when they go astray. Come find out who has been naughty and who has been nice! We will answer the, "why do I have to?" questions that you may have.
Refresher Training:
Community Based Training and Laboratory Consultations
Annual refresher laboratory safety training is provided through on site opportunities:
Community Based Training: Because a laboratory's safety conditions are often affected by their neighbors and how common use areas (for example, darkrooms and cold rooms) are maintained, this is an opportunity for people from a variety of laboratory groups that share resources to get together to discuss safety concerns, facilitated by ES staff. We work with individuals who are part of this community to schedule an appropriate time for this session and to identify key issues to cover.
Laboratory Consultations: ES staff are available to visit specific laboratories to provide on-site consultations about safety concerns in the laboratory. Contact us at esf@uvm.edu to arrange a time for such a visit.
All laboratory workers should participate in one of these forms of refresher training at least every year. Thus, the total formal Environmental Safety training is about one day per year for the first two years and 2 hours per year after that. You can track your participation in these trainings from our web site. Questions about this program can be directed to esf@uvm.edu
