UVM ChemSource

What is UVM ChemSource?

UVM ChemSource is UVM's chemical distribution program. The Environmental Safety Facility (ESF) on Spear Street enables us to store chemicals in a space designed for that purpose, rather than in laboratories, which are designed as work space, not storage space for chemicals. The ChemSource program makes new and a limited supply of recycled chemicals available to campus users quickly and easily.

Free up space in your laboratory!

With ChemSource available, you won't have to order and find a place to keep large amounts of chemicals because we will supply them from our stock. After you place your order with us, we can generally deliver your order within 2-3 days. Benefits of ChemSource include a reduction of risks associated with storing hazardous chemicals in your laboratory by ordering smaller amounts more frequently without suffering the price disadvantage of small unit ordering.

Do you want to save money?
(or, why buy 4 gals of acetone, if you need 500 ml?)

Chemicals bought through commercial suppliers are much cheaper on unit price basis when bought by the case. However, this cost does not include the storage space and disposal costs for the chemicals that won't be used immediately. These costs, plus the hazard of storing excess flammable or corrosive chemicals in the laboratory, make buying cases of chemicals for the cost savings a poor choice. Single container chemicals bought through ChemSource will be available at the lower case pricing, plus a marginal mark-up to cover program costs. The ChemSource price is about 40% cheaper than buying the same size container through commercial suppliers.

Would you like to help UVM save money?

The American Chemical Society estimates that between 30% and 40% of laboratory chemical waste is unused chemicals bought to realize the unit price savings of case quantities. By using ChemSource, you avoid this waste and help UVM avoid these unnecessary disposal costs - in the last few years less than 15% of UVM's chemical waste has been unused chemicals. In addition, by limiting the amount of hazardous chemicals that are received, stored and transported on campus, we will be better able to comply with EPA, DOT and OSHA regulations. This program is an important part of the University's Hazardous Waste Minimization Program, required by the state and the EPA.

It's easy and efficient!

To order chemicals from the distribution program, visit our on line ordering form. Tell us what you want, how much, where it needs to go, who will sign for it and a chart string to charge - no other paperwork is necessary!

We're flexible!

In addition to stocking generally used chemicals, we are interested in meeting special needs of campus laboratories. If you need to order a large quantity of a material to be used over a period of time, we can help you store the chemical until it is needed. If you would like us to carry a specific chemical let us know. In addition to chemicals, we stock safety supplies not generally available on campus, such as blue spirit, environmentally safe thermometers (replace those mercury thermometers now!), one gallon amber waste jugs, and five gallon poly drums. Again, we're open to suggestions for safety equipment to stock.
