Dr. John N. Evans is Senior Advisor to the President of UVM and Professor in the College of Medicine. Dr. Evans holds B.A. in Biology from Clark University and a Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Florida, Gainesville. In his current role as Senior Advisor to the President, Dr. Evans is responsible for fostering the commercialization of intellectual property of the faculty, staff and students of the University. He is also charged with building and enhancing strong relationships between the University and the private sector in Vermont, the region, and across the nation.

A member of the University of Vermont faculty since 1976, Dr. Evans has held numerous leadership positions.

As Dean and/or Executive Dean of the College of Medicine over the past fourteen years he has served as a member of the executive leadership team of the College and University. Over that period the revenue of the College grew from $35,000,000 to $125,000,000 in 2006. Responsibilities have included strategic planning, financial management and the recruitment of Chairs of departments and directors of programs. A rewarding experience has been the opportunity to lead the revitalization and expansion of the medical campus to better support the mission. This included the development of the overall plan to construct a new research building, a new education center and most recently the purchase of an offsite research facility. Experiences included presenting the plans to gain Board approval, selection of architects and contractors, management of the projects, and completion of the projects on time and on budget. In 1998, Dr. Evans led the University team that issued nearly sixty million dollars in bonds including selection of investment bankers and attaining excellent scores from the rating agencies.

Throughout his career, Dr. Evans has had the opportunity to work with many groups across the State of Vermont on diverse topics. Many of these efforts involved interactions with the Governor, the Congressional Delegation, other senior government officials and State Legislators. As a representative of the College of Medicine, he worked with many physicians and hospital executives throughout the State.

In 2001, Dr. Evans commissioned the feasibility study to determine whether a high technology business incubator should be developed in Vermont with the potential for affiliation with the University of Vermont. This undertaking developed out of his work as a member of the Vermont Technology Council. This effort led to the establishment of the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies (VCET) at the University of Vermont. VCET is now a reality and Dr. Evans remains a board member.

In addition to his role as Senior Advisor to the President, Dr. Evans is President of the Vermont Technology Council (VTC), a consortium of State leaders working to engage higher education, government and the private sector to build a strong and prosperous economy.
