BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP)-- The University of Vermont is set to throw a switch on a new computer information line that will allow researchers to share large amounts of information with their colleagues at other institutions.
UVM is part of the North East Cyberinfrastucture Consortium, which has been awarded more than $17 million to build a high-speed fiber optic network across five states.
On Sunday, a new leg in the network will be turned on, connecting UVM to Albany, N.Y.
The states in the consortium are Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Delaware.
The new network will be capable of transmitting 60 gigabits per second, some 35 times faster than the current rate. It will allow researchers to share the huge files that have become common in many research fields.
