Antioch Education Abroad (AEA)

Where: Brazil, Argentina and Cameroon
When: Fall or Spring semester
Language: Depends on program. See below.
Program Type: External Program
Specific Programs:
• The Brazilian Ecosystems: The Protection and Management of Biodiversity: offers students the opportunity to travel throughout Brazil to study ecology, field methodology, and natural resource management. Courses include a field internship, ecology and biodiversity of Brazil, Brazilian natural resource management, and beginner/intermediate/advanced Portuguese language. This program is taught in English
• Globalization and Community Responses in Argentina: students will explore social, cultural, environmental and economic impacts of globalization on the local communities in the Patagonian Andes region of Argentina. This program is an interdisciplinary seminar that investigates issues of cultural, economic, and environmental sustainability for a natural resource-rich region. This program is taught in Spanish.
• Community Development in Cameroon: experience life in Cameroon and engage with local and university communities, develop the fundamental cross-cultural skills needed for successful-engagement in community development projects, explore opportunities to study and practice your French language. Throughout the program, students engage in a service learning project, applying theory into practice, while pursuing their individual disciplinary interests. This program is taught in English.

Arava Institute for Environmental Studies

Where: Kibbutz Ketura, Israel

Special Features: Interdisciplinary environmental study in the Middle East with students from Israel and other Middle Eastern countries, US, Canada, and others; Courses in environmental ethics, policy and economics, ecology, and sustainability; Peace-building and leadership seminars; Live on a kibbutz in the Arava Desert.

Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS)

Location: Copenhagen, Denmark

Special Features: Faculty-led course-integrated program study tours: Students choose one "core course" and then several electives from over 150 courses offered.

• Sustainability in Europe – Studies in sustainable development and its environmental, political and social issues; includes trip in Denmark or Sweden and European tour

• Science and the Environment – Climate change from a historical perspective; climate change history and theory; includes study tour in Western Denmark and Greenland

EcoQuest New Zealand

Location: Field station located north of Kaiaua, New Zealand, North Island
When: Fall and Spring semesters, and a shorter summer program

Program Type: External Program;
Special Features: In Partnership with the University of New Hampshire Department of Natural Resources, the Ecoquest program in New Zealand provides an ideal context for multi-faceted field studies in ecology, and a natural laboratory of unique geology, and ecosystem diversity and island biogeography. This program is a rigorous field based program with a focus on practical skills, conceptual thinking, and an opportunity to contribute to local conservation and resource management initiatives through service learning and Directed Research Projects.

International Honors Program (IHP)

Locations: Dependent on specific program (See below and check web site): All programs travel to multiple countries for a comparative study: U.S., Turkey, Tanzania, India, Mexico, New Zealand, Brazil, South Africa, Vietnam, Senegal, Argentina, Switzerland and China

Institute for the International Education of Students (IES)

School for International Training (SIT)

Locations: Specifically environmentally-themed programs in Australia, Brazil, Ecuador, Iceland, Madagascar, Panama and Tanzania (in addition to a wide variety of other themed programs elsewhere. See below.)

Language: Programs in Spanish- and French-speaking countries are taught in Spanish and French. Other programs are taught in English. Students study the language of the country.

Special Features: Interdisciplinary field studies courses based at a field station and in-country trips; some programs include travel to adjacent countries; includes directed research component—group research project guided by a faculty member with individuals working on separate parts.

UVM Semester Programs

Locations: Belize, and Oaxaca, Mexico
When: Spring semester only
Program Type: UVM semester program
Note: Out of State students pay in-state tuition for these programs.
Special Features:

• Belize– Semester Abroad Program in Sustainable Development, hands-on experience, Spanish language study and practice; courses taught by UVM and Belizean faculty, includes field-based trips and focus on service learning. Spend time living in a Maya village, in the rainforest, and on islands on the barrier reef, and visit wildlife preserves and Maya archeological sites!

• Oaxaca, Mexico – Three separate tracks: science and art, food systems or Spanish language; includes field-based trips and homestay experience with a small group of students to learn the culture of Mexico and practice your Spanish. Courses will enable students to develop a better understanding of the economic, political, cultural, agricultural, historical and artistic forces influencing life today in Mexico. Course instruction is in English except for Spanish language courses.
