Spring/Summer 1995
Welcome to the first edition of the Bittersweet Vine! We felt that it was
time for the Environmental Program to reach out regularly to UVM students,
faculty, staff, alumni/ae, and friends. We intend to publish two
newsletters a year with news and notes of interest to our ever-growing
Environmental Studies community. Please tell us what you think! We
welcome comments, suggestions, and especially submissions. We chose
bittersweet (Celastrus scandens) as the theme of our newsletter's title
for several reasons. The Program is housed in the Bittersweet building at
UVM. Bittersweet grows from Louisiana up to southern Canada and has been
used as a folk medicinal antidote for many ailments. The vines have long
been brought indoors to decorate homes with a display of red berries
nested among the orange leaves. As far-ranging, useful, colorful and
traditionally "friendly" as bittersweet is, we hope our newsletter offers
similar value. Gioia and Ibit
