Bread is a staple food for millions of people around the world, especially in West and Central Asia. But the wheat, from which most bread is made, can be affected by insects known as the Sunn Pest. Even a small infestation can render a harvest worthless and ruin farmers. Now research is examining the insect’s natural weaknesses to give the farmers a chance to fight back.

Skinner Receives Award
The Friends congratulate Dr. Margaret Skinner on receiving the 2005 Tree Steward Award for the "Leader" category, recognizing her outstanding contribution to the goals of Vermont's Urban and Community Forestry Program through her years of service to Branch Out Burlington (BOB!) and in particular, her efforts to start with the Burlington Community Seedling Nursery.

BOB! is an urban forestry advocacy group for the City of Burlington. Margaret created the Burlington Community Seedling Nursery to produce low cost trees adapted to this region, especially seedlings not readily available from commercial nurseries. The seedlings will be planted at the Burlington Community Tree Nursery at the Horticultural Farm and eventually transplanted to various locations around the city of Burlington. Both the Seedling Nursery and the Tree Nursery encourage volunteer involvement in managing Burlington's Urban Forest. Plus, BOB! is FUN. For more information: www.branchoutburlington.org
