What can I do to reduce E. coli in Lake Champlain?
Dog poop is a major source of E. coli in Lake Champlain. Each gram of dog poop (equivalent to about half a teaspoon) contains 20,000,000 E. coli bacteria colonies. Unless disposed of properly, these bacteria are washed into our waterways when it rains. Reducing water runoff can also help lower E. coli counts in our watershed; water running off driveways and into streets and storm sewers can carry bacteria into the lake. Park cars on grassy areas before washing them, and aim garden sprinklers carefully to avoid paved surfaces.
