scholarship Awards & Scholarships

The following awards and scholarships are given by the department to Economics majors. Financial need may be considered in some of the following awards. Recipients are selected by the department and students do not generally need to apply to be considered. However, there is an exception to this practice. Students interested in the Amato/Nadworny Scholarship or the Milton J. Nadworny Award must apply to the department, as indicated below.

 
John H. Converse Award
For a senior outstanding in academic achievement. Named in honor of John H. Converse, through whose efforts economics began to be taught at UVM in 1899.
Freeman Saltus Award
For a senior outstanding in academic achievement.

Anthony S. Campagna Award
For a senior majoing in Economics who plans to go on to graduate studies in Economics or a related field (does not inlcude Business).  Based on academic achievement.  Established by Susan Hudson-Wilson, Class of 1976, in recognition of Professor Campagna's long career and accomplishments at UVM.

Milton J. Nadworny Award
For a junior economics major. Based on academic merit, independence of mind, determination, intellectual curiosity and commitment to human welfare.

Candidates need to apply to the department to be considered. Applications are available and must be returned to the department in February (check with the department for exact date).  Established in memory of Milton J. Nadworny, Professor of Economics from 1952-1986, by his former students, colleagues and friends.   Mr. Amato is UVM Class of 1963. Amato/Nadworny Scholarship
To a junior economics major. Candidates should have demonstrated leadership both inside and outside of the classroom.  Award recipients will be selected on the basis of academic merit and achievement outside of the cla ssroom.

Candidates need to apply to the department to be considered. Applications are available and must be returned to the department in February (check with the department for exact date). Established by Frank C. and Regina Amato in memory of Milton J. Nadworny, Professor of Economics from 1952-1986. Mr. Amato is UVM Class of 1963.

William H. Lamson Scholarship
For an outstanding junior.  This award is shared with the School of Business.  The Economics department awards it in even-numbered years.

Philipp H. Lohman Memorial Scholarship
For an outstanding junior or senior economics major. This fund was created by the friends and former students of Professor Philipp H. Lohman who served as professor and Chairman of the Department of Commerce and Economics at UVM from 1945-1963.

Mark J. Zwynenburg Memorial Scholarship
For an outstaning junior economics major, with a second major in political science or history, whose "qualities and interests exemplify the thoughtful, inquisitive and industrious spirit" of Mark Zwynenburg , Class of 1981. Established in his memory by John and Barbara Zwynenburg.

S. William Gerston Scholarship
For an outstanding junior or senior economics major.  This scholarship is shared with the School of Business.
