At The University of Vermont, several higher education and student affairs
graduate assistantships are available annually. Each assistantship is designed
to provide graduate students with a professional opportunity to support and
develop the University's goals and activities through its work with students.

assistantships are enrolled in the Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration
graduate program.

Position: Program and Outreach Coordinator

General Description:
The graduate assistant for the ALANA Student Center (ASC) will engage in multicultural affairs work on both frontline student- and institutional-levels. The mission of the ASC is to support the holistic development of African, Latino(a), Asian, Native American, and bi/multiracial students to attain their goals for: academic achievement, personal growth, identity formation, and cultural development at a predominantly White institution. This position reports to the Director of the ASC and requires a person who is creative, collaborative, independent, and can function well in a spontaneous office environment with a high level of student contact. This position also requires a demonstrated commitment to working with and supporting the development of people of color. Additionally the graduate assistant will have opportunities to develop and implement programs and initiatives that benefit the ALANA community and contribute to the overall vision and mission of the ASC.
Assistantship Responsibilities:
Represent the ASC in collaboration with the other departments in the Diversity and Equity Unit, which includes the Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Office; Women's Center; and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning & Ally Services, The Center for Cultural Pluralism and the Abenaki Outreach Program.
Attend and contribute to ASC staff meetings, Diversity and Equity Unit Meetings and Staff Clinical Consultation with the Counseling Center.
Assist in advising student leaders of color, and in particular, ALANA Affiliated Student Organizations (e.g., Black Student Union, Alianza Latina, Asian American Student Union, ALANA GEAR. Multiracial student group, etc.) by attending meetings and holding workshops, etc.
Produce and edit the ASC's monthly newsletter.
Assist in planning major events sponsored by the ASC (e.g., Homecoming Weekend events, Welcome Back Family Reunion, ALANA Spring Banquet, Community Meetings, ALANA Graduation Celebration, etc.).
Assist in the planning of the Summer Enrichment Scholarship Program (SESP) with opportunities to be a summer staff employee for SESP.

Position: Graduate Assistant for Cultural Pluralism
Title: Programming and Collaboration Coordinator
Department: The Center for Cultural Pluralism

General Description:
The skills required for this assistantship include having an interest in working directly on issues of culture and social justice, strong writing skills, the ability to work collaboratively with CCP staff and the UVM community in such areas as: program development, grant-writing process, and event production. There is a need to be able to communicate effectively, be creative and meet deadlines.
The benefits during this assistantship include:
Exposure to the upper-level administrative process at UVM through committee involvement,
Experience with multicultural and social justice conference ( presentation options possible),
Working with programs, offices and department within UVM and the Vermont community,
Development of program development and facilitation skills
Opportunity to directly manage a budget for film series and art openings,
Potential co-teaching or conference presentation opportunities, and
Limited funding to support professional development events (conferences or workshops)
Over time it would be expected the graduate assistant would have opportunities to create her/his own programs with the support of the Center. As part of increased responsibility the graduate assistant would have her/his own project budget in their second year related to a specific project or program. There is the potential for the development of conference presentations. The Center may have funding for a two-month summer position with CCP as well.
Assistantship Responsibilities:
Oversee CCP specific programs, including budget responsibility, development of displays, recruiting presenters/artists to do lectures, shows or workshops and organizing receptions [Examples of these programs are the Art Gallery, Multicultural Skills Workshops and CCP Film Series]
Development of new program/workshop ideas, especially in the second year
Identifying new resources for our programs in collaboration a variety of groups
Organize specific projects, such as Art Gallery Exhibits, MLK event, CCP Film Series and CCP workshops
Assisting with other on-going CCP/UVM projects related to curriculum transformation and cultural competencies development,
Co-organizing and carrying out presentations and trainings
Co-presenting opportunities as appropriate to interest and skills for UVM
Assisting the Center for Cultural Pluralism with other activities as they arise.

Position: Graduate Assistant for CESS Dean's Office
Department: College of Education and Social Services - Dean's Office

General Description:
The graduate assistant for the CESS Dean's Office will become an integral part of the Dean's Office functions involved with CESS communications, marketing, student leadership and multicultural affairs as well leading a Dean's Office educational initiative. This position reports to the senior leadership team of the Dean's Office and requires a person who is creative, collaborative, independent, and can function well in a confidential, spontaneous office environment while meeting deadlines. Additionally, the graduate assistant will have opportunities to benefit the CESS community and contribute to the overall vision and mission of the college.
Responsibilities Include:
Serve as a key member of the CESS Communications team; Play a key role in the development of public relations materials and events for the College.Collaborate with the CESS Assistant Dean for Student Administration in the areas of student advising, College and University committee membership, and College recruitment and retention events.
Assist with the College's Student Advisory Board and engage students in monthly meetings regarding areas of interests, diversity and concerns.
Support events sponsored by Student Advisory Board.Coordinate with faculty to help in the building of alumni networks
Lead, plan, manage and direct educational events involving K-12 students in the Vermont Community.

Position: Assistant Residence Director
Department: Residential Life

General Description:
The Assistant Residence Director (ARD) for the Department of Residential Life is a part-time employee and full-time graduate staff member, who is directly supervised by a Residence Director (RD). The individual in this position assists the RD in all matters pertaining to the management of a residential complex.
Assistantship Responsibilities:
Assist in the recruitment, selection, training, development, and evaluation of student staff members.
Implement educational and social programs that promote the development of community, student awareness and interaction, through the advisement of staff, hall council, and other student leaders.
Assist in carrying out monthly health and safety inspections, and the opening and closing of the complex for the fall and spring semester and breaks (as well as mid-semester breaks (i.e., Thanksgiving and Spring Break).
Create and maintain systems which provide administrative structure to clearly define responsibility and delegate authority.
Actively engage student staff members and residence hall students in programming, training and dialogue specific to diversity and social justice
Understand, interpret, communicate, and enforce policies within their residential complex.
Conduct Incident Review Meetings for residents who have allegedly violated the University Conduct Code/Departmental Policy/Community Standards and coordinate administrative paperwork accordingly.
Serve as a mediation officer during roommate or group related conflict.
Serve as resource/referral agent for campus and community resources and encourage participation in programs to assist in students' ongoing personal and academic development.
Participate in a rotating on-call duty schedule, and respond to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis.

Position: Coordinator for Student Staff Recruitment, Selection, & Training

General Description:
The Coordinator for Student Staff Recruitment, Selection, & Training within the Department of Residential life, working with the Assistant Director for Student Staff Recruitment, Selection, and Training, will assist the coordination of Resident Advisor (RA) and Peer Conduct Board (PCB) recruitment, selection, and training as well as serve as a liaison to various campus departments and committees involved in campus programming. The person in this position will serve for 10 months with negotiable start and end dates and have evening and weekend responsibilities. This position reports to the Assistant Director and requires a person who is creative, organized, independent and can function well in spontaneous office environment with regular student contact. This position also requires a demonstrated commitment to the values of the department and its commitment to diversity and social justice. Additionally the graduate assistant will have an opportunity to facilitate an RA leadership class, develop initiatives around student staff recruitment and selection, coordinate RA and PCB training, co-advise the RA Council and contribute to the overall vision and mission of the department.

General Description:
This graduate assistantship is designed to provide support for Campus Programs in the Department of Student Life. Specific duties include hiring and supervision of student staff, program planning and execution, and support of campus-wide programming. Most importantly, we are looking for a self-starter who is creative and organized. The Office of Campus Programs is responsible for large-scale social and entertainment programming, coordination of Diversity and Heritage programming and the oversight of the UVM Program Board. Our programming reflects the diverse interests of our community and ranges from small-scale concerts and film screenings to major concerts, comedy shows and multi-week programs.

Position: Graduate Assistant for Leadership in Student Life

General Description:
The University of Vermont's newly revised Civic Engagement Office is housed in the Department of Student Life. Our mission is to foster a culture of student involvement, leadership, and learning through hands-on service, activism, and engagement.

Extensive training creation and delivery for student leaders, including outreach and maintaining online tools and resources

Position: Graduate Assistant for Operations
Department: Dudley H. Davis Center (Division of Administrative and Facilities Services)

General Description:
The Graduate Assistant for Operations & Event Services serves as the primary advocate for the student staff experience within the department. As such, the graduate assistant will coordinate and oversee the student employment program including recruitment, hiring, training and assessment. In addition, the graduate will directly supervise a team of 25-30 information desk assistants. The Graduate Assistant is in a unique position to work in a highly collaborative manner with the Department of Student Life, which is responsible for student activities and building program functions.
Responsibilities Include:
Directly recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate 20-25 student Information Desk Assistants and 1 Lead Information Desk Assistant. Includes: bi-weekly staff meetings, occasional staff activities, and daily scheduling.Coordinate the student employment program, including: hiring, training, and assessment of the entire Davis Center student staff, approximately 75 students. Recruitment outreach will involve working with the Assistant Director for Marketing and other student supervisors on recruitment strategies and branding at key times throughout the year.
Assist Office Manager with basic HR duties as needed each semester for new and returning student staff.Advise and run regular meetings with the 5 Student Leads from each employment area (Info Desk, Building Manager, Tech Assistants, Production Assistants, Office Reservation Assistants) as the central planning team for full-staff trainings and programs throughout the academic year.Coordinate Town Hall staff meetings and end of the semester gatherings with the student Team Lead group.
Schedule and run bi-weekly student supervisor staff meetings to address ongoing student employment needs and programming efforts.Serve as key member of departmental working group for ongoing diversity and social justice training efforts for our staff.Work independently and in conjunction with the other Davis Center Operation & Event Services staff to develop, deploy and maintain a variety of assessment tools relating to staff trainings, student job satisfaction, and other departmental efforts as needed for the continual improvement of the department and facility. Work collaboratively with operations and student life staff to analyze and report data.Maintain and improve systems for the management of information and communications with staff.Maintain the recreation and game room through the ongoing maintenance of pool tables, board games, and magazine subscriptions.Assist Director of Operations with special projects and research associated with the management of a 186,000 sq. ft. facility.Perform other duties as assigned.

Position: Graduate Assistant for the Honors College

General Description:
The Graduate Assistant (GA) in the Honors College is placed in the unique position of constructing a professional experience that links Residential Life and Academic Affairs. The (GA) functions as a member of the Honors College staff and assists with the daily operations, program development, and management of special projects. Because the Honors College is a Residential Learning Community (RLC), the GA also interacts on a daily basis with Residential Life staff and holds a position on the RLC Summit Committee. As well, the GA works with faculty, staff, and administrators from across the institution. This position requires the GA to be an independent thinker and worker who is willing to take initiative on new projects. This position also requires the GA to be an effective collaborator with upper level administrators, faculty, and student affairs staff. This position reports to the Assistant to the Dean of the Honors College.
Assistantship Responsibilities:
Work with the Honors College (HC) staff (including the Faculty in Residence) in planning, publicizing, and implementing Honors College programs.Develop programming specific to first year students, with a focus on the first six weeks.
Oversee the Peer Leader Program and supervise the HC Peer Leaders (Requires evening office hours in the Residence Hall.)
Serve as liaison to Residential Life, working with Resident Director and Assistant Resident Director to develop programming for residents of University Heights North. Attend Res Life staff meeting as agreed upon.
Coordinate overnight student visit program, student panels, and room tours as part of Admitted Student Visit Days.

General Description:
The LGBTQA Center's mission is to work with others at UVM to: inspire personal growth and empowerment; nurture community; educate for social justice; and advocate for liberation - the freedom to live openly in an affirming community - for all people of non-dominant sexual and gender identities, and everyone who aspires to be their advocates. Our work is shaped by our shared commitment to social justice and respect for the many connections among race, ethnicity, gender, disability, religion, gender identity, and sexual orientation. This graduate assistant, under the supervision of the Director, helps build connections and community within and between our office and students through in-person and virtual forms of outreach and communication, and helps design and deliver community-building, and issues-oriented programming to the UVM LGBTQA community.

Position: Class Council Program Coordinator

General Description:
The Class Council Program
Coordinator in Alumni & Parent Programs (APP) has the unique
opportunity to unite the areas of student affairs and alumni relations.
This graduate student reports to the Assistant Director of Alumni &
Parent Programs and works to build lifelong connections with current
UVM students and the department. The primary role of the Class Council
Program Coordinator is to supervise the four Class Council Presidents
and to advise their respective Class Councils. Major areas of focus for
this position include student engagement, leadership development,
multicultural education and program development, marketing and
assessment.
Assistantship Responsibilities:
Advise the four Class Councils (e.g. 2010 Senior Class Council,
2011 Junior Class Council, 2012 Sophomore Class Council and 2013 First
Year Class Council)
Supervise and mentor the four Class
Council Presidents by meeting with the group as well as with each
president individually on a weekly basis
Coordinate all
council-wide programs and initiatives (e.g. fall retreat for all
councils, spring membership recruitment, leadership development
seminars and programs, class surveys and assessments and group
development initiatives)
Serve as a liaison to other
offices including Student Life, LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,

Position: Career Services Coordinator for Residential Life Outreach

General Description:
This unique and challenging position
combines two essential areas of student development into a single
assistantship: Career Services and Residential Life. The focus of
the role is to bring career information, reflection and growth to
resident students using two main vehicles: Residential Life outreach
and a group of undergraduate peer advisors. Training will be provided
to develop or enhance the Graduate Assistant's knowledge and skills in
career counseling, multicultural competencies, program development and
supervision. Career Services provides direct supervision and office
space; Residential Life provides support, access to their staff and
systems.
Assistantship Responsibilities:
Provide career related programming for students in the residence halls. Focus determined by student populations' needs.
Disseminate
information to residential students regarding services offered by
Career Services and provide tips regarding the career development
process.
Act as a resource to Residential Life staff
