In the Spotlight: Lily Lovinger
"As a political science major and African studies minor, I always intended to pursue a career with an
international non-governmental organization after college. However as I rounded the final bend in my senior year,
I began having second thoughts. Instead, I realized I was most excited about the idea of working in the arts non-profit
world. My passion for the arts developed as a life-long dancer - classical ballet for 12 years and modern technique in
college - and through other experiences in theatre and music. I also knew that I would come to any position in the arts world
with a political mind - I am still deeply interested in developing countries' political and economic situations.
This fall, I was extremely excited to obtain an internship with the Mark Morris Dance Group in Brooklyn, NY - also where I am currently living. I am working with the development, marketing and general management departments there. It has been a really wonderful experience so far - I'm doing everything from scanning music scores to writing marketing proposals. (I even got to turn pages for the pianist during a Mark Morris Dance Group performance at New York City Center! ... so scary!) Looking forward, I am most excited about jobs that are focused on arts education programs, but I am also really open-minded about what's next - partly because of the current job market - and partly because I am not positive about the path I want to take.
