Guidelines for submitting
a paper or panel for the AAA meetings for review by SOLGA

SOLGA members (and other AAA members) who wish to present their work at the AAA meetings are encouraged to submit appropriate papers or panels to SOLGA for review.

In evaluating submitted papers and panels for inclusion in AAA’s scientific program, the SOLGA program co-editors consider a range of issues in deciding whether to reject or accept papers and panels, and how to grade and rank them. The primary criterion is the overall quality of the paper/panel as evident in the abstract(s).

Obviously, a relevance to SOLGA’s mission statement is of great importance, and we encourage submissions of all panels and papers that deal with LGBTQ, sexuality, gender, and/or other related and intersecting topics. Moreover, submissions that relate to the annual conference theme are particularly welcome.

The program committee will strive to include as much diversity in SOLGA’s program as possible, both in terms of participants, areas, sub-fields, and topics. Moreover, in line with SOLGA’s goal of promoting scholarly exchanges and the work of junior scholars, panels put together through open calls for papers, and papers and panels organized by junior scholars, are particularly encouraged. Timeliness and completeness of application materials are also favorably looked upon.

Please note that submitting panels or papers for review does not guarantee inclusion on the program. You do not have to be a member of SOLGA to submit a paper or panel for review by SOLGA.

Please see the AAA’s webpage for more general information about the submission of materials for review. All papers and panels must be submitted via the AAA website.

In addition, the SOLGA program committee also has the opportunity to nominate panels (up to 3.75 hours of conference time) for invited status, which guarantees the panel a place on the program. In addition to the above guidelines, please note the following points if you intend to submit a panel for consideration for invited status:

1. We have a preference for single (1.75 hour) over double (3.75 hour) sessions for invited status sessions. Since SOLGA only has 3.75 hours of invited session time, we prefer to sponsor two separate, shorter sessions, thereby increasing SOLGA’s visibility on the program.

2. Panel organizers are strongly encouraged to seek co-sponsorship with other sections.

3. Invited status will be determined only after panels are submitted in full (with all presenters, abstracts, etc.) to the SOLGA program committee.

4. Decisions to confer SOLGA invited status are made by consensus of the SOLGA program committee membership. No single member of the program committee has the power to grant invited status.

5. The SOLGA Co-Chairs and Section Program Editors are no longer prohibited from organizing or giving papers on sessions being considered for invited status. To avoid conflicts of interest, committee members, including the Program Editors, will recuse themselves from all decision-making relating to their own sessions.
