Week 1
[edit]
Superficial back
- What nerve innervates the trapezius?
- Accessory nerve (CN XI) and ventral rami of C3, C4
- What does the greater occipital nerve do?
- Derived from the dorsal ramus of C2 and emerging between the atlas and axis inferior to the inferior oblique muscle, the greater occipital nerve provides sensory input to the back of the scalp and motor input to the deep posterior neck muscles.
[edit]
Back muscles & suboccipital region
- What innervates the erector spinae muscles?
- Dorsal rami
- What are the actions of the rhomboids?
- Retraction of the scapula.
- Point to the semispinalis capitis.
- See Netter plates 175-176.
- Name the bony holes that the vertebral artery passes through.
- Transverse foramina of C1-C6.
[edit]
Vertebral canal & spinal cord
- Name a hole where you would find a spinal nerve.
- Intervertebral foramen.
- What is the cauda equina?
- The cauda equina (L. horse's tail) is a collection of dorsal and ventral rootlets caudal to the conus medullaris (approximately at the level of the L1/L2 vertebrae). The spinal cord is not present at this region, making it the preferred position to perform a lumbar puncture.
- What kinds of fibers do you find in ventral rami -- motor, sensory, or both?
- Ventral rami (and dorsal rami) contain both motor and sensory fibers (including sympathetics). The rami should not be confused with the ventral and dorsal roots, which exclusively contain motor and sensory fibers, respectively.
