Music 156: Harmony & Form Lab IV

Dictation: “Pidigori” (Upside-Down) by Thomas Mapfumo (.mp3)

for Wednesday:

a) Transcribe the first lead guitar pattern (heard at the beginning and continually thereafter). You decide the appropriate meter, but write the fastest notes (the starting notes) as sixteenths. The rhythm repeats but the pitches change, so be sure to transcribe the complete pattern, which is 4 measures of either 6/8 or 3/4.

for Monday:

b) Transcribe the basic 4-measure pattern of the second electric guitar part (it enters about 5" into the track, but settles into the pattern a bit later, at around 7").

c) Transcribe the bass guitar part from its entrance (around m. 4) up to m. 12. Note: the bass is not so regular as the other guitar parts.

d) Transcribe the new electric guitar part (which begins at around 1'30") for one complete 4-measure cycle.

All of the above should be in SCORE format, with the parts properly aligned, in computer notation. You can use the playback function to check your hearing.

EXTRA CREDIT: Transcribe the bass drum part and show exactly how it fits with the other parts. (The rhythm is very simple in itself, but the alignment with the other parts is not.)
