Re: Union Activity Update
As you may know, we recently entered a period in which non-unionized staff members are being asked by organizers from two different unions to consider union representation. One of the unions, NEA-VT, has filed a petition with the Vermont Labor Relations Board seeking recognition of its representation of one group of non-represented UVM employees. You can read that petition by accessing a link on the Human Resource Services web page (www.uvm.edu/hrs).
In light of increased activity on campus, questions are arising about the pros and cons of unionizing and about what staff and union representatives may and may not do with regard to organizing activity during work hours. We recognize and respect each employee’s right to lawfully organize and decide whether unionization makes sense. At the same time, it is extremely important for faculty, staff and students to be able to pursue their normal activities to ensure that University operations continue without interruption.
The University will continue to provide relevant information to you through the Informed Choice website (www.uvm.edu/informed). Topics addressed there include workplace guidelines, compensation and benefits, election process, and general representation issues.
If you have questions, e-mail Informed@uvm.edu.
