A Youth Empowerment Project
August 5th-16th--Oaxaca, Mexico
| Sat., Aug. 5th:
Arrive Oaxaca/ Sign & Settle in at the COVORPA center in Reyes Mantecon (20 minutes from Oaxaca city). |
Fri. Aug.11th:
Continue discussions in Chicahuaxtla; return to Oaxaca City. |
| Sun. Aug. 6th:
Orientation presentations, participant introductions; discussion of goals and activities....1st projects begin: using local materials (clay, etc.), building a dry latrine for a local recreation area; community activities. Each evening, participants will share stories, play music, reflect on the day's activities... different participants will begin talking about their special projects (e.g., Haitian will talk about the education of street children in Haiti; our friends from NYC and Michigan will discuss their respective programs, etc.). |
Sat. Aug. 12th:
Visit the Zapotec pyramids as Monte Alban (just North of Oaxaca city); and spend the rest of the day in "free time" exploring Oaxaca city. |
| Mon. Aug. 7th:
Work on the sweat lodge and the dry latrine continues... Our Mexico hosts discuss the philosophy of their work, ideas on human rights, the idea of work as a "gift," etc. Work projects to be completed; participants will engage in dialogue regarding these tasks. |
Sun. Aug. 13th:
Introductory presentation/discussion on "traditional healing"/ and hands-on field trip with traditional healers, finding and preparing herbs, etc. |
| Tues. Aug. 8th:
Traditional agriculture: Local farmers will talk about traditional farming techniques and products in the context of local environment and local and regional agriculture markets. Markets in Oaxaca are very important- The hands-on component includes using Ox and yoke to plant the traditional maiz milpa. This activity will be tied to the Comida activity. Morning will consist of talk and practice. Afternoon in preparing meals. Introducing the meaning of "comida" (meal) as a time for respect and understanding--each delegation (e.g., from NYC, Vermont Michigan, Haiti, Mexico, etc.) will have a chance to prepare and discuss a special meal that reflects its geographic and cultural roots. |
Mon. Aug. 14th:
Presentations & workshops (show, tell, video, etc.) from participating
organizations and individuals: e.g., the alternative education programs
in Haiti, the construction of an eco-village" in Michigan, the dream of
a "charter school" in NYC (that might also have education centers in Vermont,
Mexico, Michigan).

| Wed. Aug. 9th:
Travel to Chicahuaxtla ("chic- a wacs-la"), traditional Triqui village (where we will reside for the next 2 days), 3-4 hours drive north of Oaxaca city. |
Tues. Aug. 15th:
How to continue developing the network of communication and project-building initiatives that are represented at ENCUENTRO 2000. Planning future encuentros -- in Vermont, elsewhere; how to expand the network to colleagues working in Europe, Africa, S. America; and more... Evaluations. Closing Party!! |
| Thurs. Aug. 10th
In Chicahuaxtla Learning about and participating in traditional ways of the Triqui people, their education, livelihood in weaving, the "comida." Sharing stories form the various cultures of all the participants, exploring similarities/ differences, hopes/aspirations; how to be in touch with one another on the future. |

Departures. |
Note: In addition to the above, some educators and youth may take a special side trips to specific sites/activities of interest; for example, since Gody and the Haitians operate a radio program, they might take a trip to a village where Mexican educators and activists have developed their own radio station/programs.
**All activites are subject to schedule change; the order of events is but a suggestion, be flexible and enjoy!!
