Policy : What should users's expect

What should user's expect from these machines ?

This about this room from the user's perspective. How can we configure and manages these machines so that user's don't spend lots of time getting lost, etc ?

Needed Updates, Installs, and Fixes

Fixes

PC

  • set resolution on d800's to stay at 1280x800
  • set machines to not sleep/logout so soon (turn off monitor: 20 mins, turn off hard disks: 2 hours, system standby: 5 hours).
  • set machines to automatically login as ctl users
  • change admin pass to something more appropriate/easy to remember
  • [sjc] implement "clean desktop model" (no shortcuts, lost and found folder, perhaps with machine name)
  • [sjc] provide a nice background (e.g. UVM hazecam, campus shot, etc)

Software

The following is a list of software that is not currently installed, but that needs to be.

Mac

  • Scanner drivers!
  • Oxygen 7.2 (Windows, Mac)(see Hope for license)
  • Upgrade to OS 10.4 (Mac) (sjc) do we have licenses for this?
  • SubEthaEdit (Mac) link here should have textwrangler link or bbedit lite on there. SE is no longer free :(
  • Adobe Elements 4 (Ines)

PC

  • Notepad++ link (or some other decent text editor besides notepad)
  • Oxygen 7.2 (Windows, Mac)(see Hope for license)
  • Java JDK (2SE 5, 6?) (there is some older java stuff floating around. Also make sure the JDK is in the system path and a JAVA_HOME environment variable is set) (hag)
