Teaching During a Flu Outbreak

Because of the anticipated rate of absenteeism, the H1N1 influenza virus could impact your teaching this year. If you or your students are sick with the H1N1 flu, the first priority, of course, is to focus on prevention and recovery.

UVM does not anticipate canceling classes. However, you may encounter scenarios that could disrupt your usual patterns of teaching. A few examples are:

  1. A significant number of your students are absent for a week or so, with these absences staggered throughout the semester.
  2. Some students need to stay home, but are well enough to continue some level of course work.
  3. You are ill or have to stay home to care for a family member, but want your students to continue their course work.

These resources were developed to help you to continue your teaching and to provide alternate learning opportunities for students affected by the flu. (For influenza-related information at UVM, go to http://uvm.edu/~emergncy.)
