Women’s Varsity and Novice
Doug Connelly is excited to bring ten years of rowing and coaching experience to the University of Vermont. Most recently, he was Head Rowing Coach at Franklin Pierce University (2004 – 2009), guiding the men’s and women’s varsity crews. The FPU Ravens enjoyed success at regional regattas such as Knecht Cup and New England Fours Championship.
Doug Connelly rowed at Colby College from 1995 – 1999, earning medals at Head of the Charles, New England Rowing Championships, and ECACs. In his senior year, Connelly helped his crew win the New England Men’s Point Trophy and his team awarded him with Colby’s ‘Spirit of the Oarsmen’ Award. Following graduation, Connelly joined Coach Steenstra at The Ohio State University, coaching the novice men.
Coach Connelly balances coaching with backcountry guiding for the National Outdoor Leadership School and teaches at various educational organizations. He holds a masters degree in environmental science. Off the water, he is happiest skiing powder with his wife Liz.

Ian Anderson, a UVM Graduate and UVM Crew Alumni, begin coaching in 2010, while attending Graduate School. After two years helping with the Novice Men, he took over as Men’s Head Coach. He has lead the push for the men to return to the Varsity 8, and in the Spring of 2013 raced the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd V8 events at the New England Rowing Championships, ending a twenty year absence in the MV8 event. In addition to coaching UVM Crew, he is a Doctoral Candidate in Civil Engineering at UVM.
