Dr. Burton Wilcke is chair of the Department of Medical Laboratory and Radiation Sciences. In this role he oversees several important academic programs in the area of clinical and health sciences. In his position he is creating linkages between the healthcare and public health communities. Prior to coming to the University of Vermont in the fall of 2002 Dr. Wilcke had a career in public health spanning twenty-five years at the state and local level in California, Michigan and Vermont. Immediately prior to joining the faculty at UVM, he was the Director of Health Surveillance for the Vermont Department of Health. He has served on committees and boards of state and national public health organizations including the Vermont Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the Vermont Public Health Association (Past-President), the Association of Public Health Laboratories (Past-President), the American Public Health Association (Chair, Publications Board) and the American Society for Microbiology (Past-Chair, Public Health Division). Dr. Wilcke has served on the Editorial Board of the Emerging Infectious Diseases journal and was an editor for the Public Health Reports Supplement on Public Health Laboratory Systems. He was a participant on the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee that evaluated the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
