Prof. Brian Roy has been a faculty member at UVM since 2006 with a joint position with Fletcher Allen Health Care Medical Center. He teaches two courses where the primary content is cardiovascular and pulmonary with an emphasis on acute care physical therapy. He has had prior appointments as lecturer and adjunct faculty in two academic institutions in South Florida from 1998 - 2005 before moving to the Burlington area. Brian has been practicing physical therapy since 1982 with a focus in acute care and critical care. He earned an advanced master's in cardiopulmonary physical therapy and is currently the only American Physical Therapy Association Board Certified Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Clinical Specialist in the state of Vermont.
His clinical interests are in the physical therapy evaluation, and consultation and treatment of patients in the intensive care unit. He has a special interest in the spinal cord population with ventilatory pump dysfunction, mechanical ventilator dependent patients with respiratory failure and post surgical cardiothoracic patients with cardiac pump dysfunction. His goal as a faculty member and advanced clinician is to improve the awareness of the cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy needs of these patient populations to achieve a higher level of physical therapy practice in these service sites.
