(Academic Regalia)  When may I get my academic regalia?

Academic regalia will be available for purchase online or at the UVM Bookstore, (802) 656-3290 or toll free (800) 331-7305 beginning Monday, December 2. A complete outfit is required for all degree candidates.

(Arrival Time) What time should I arrive?

Undergraduate and graduate students are asked to arrive at Patrick Gym by 8:15 a.m. with their academic regalia. Upon arrival they are to check-in to receive their pre-printed “Student Name Card.” Pens will be available for students to add phonetic spelling of their name (if necessary) PLEASE PRINT CLEARLY. Every student will need a name card as they walk on stage as this will be their only means of announcement.

Students will line up with their college/school. Honors College students are asked to line up with Honors College, not their home school.

Doctoral and Master degree students will carry their hoods over their right left arm and be hooded on stage. Graduate College Coordinators will assist with the line-up order.

The December Commencement Ceremony will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Multipurpose Facility in the UVM Athletic Complex.

(ASL. Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Deaf Blind.  Hearing Amplification)  A member of my party is Deaf. Will ASL interpreters be present?

Yes. ASL interpreters and live captioning (CART: Communication Access Realtime Translation) will be provided at the December Commencement Ceremony.

Also, guests who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Deaf-Blind, may make arrangements for accommodations for parking, amplification, captioning, interpreters, large print or Braille programs, by completing the online Deaf and Disability Accommodation Request Form.

(Bookstore)  When will the UVM Bookstore be open?

On Saturday, December 14, the UVM Bookstore will have a kiosk in the lobby of Patrick Gym for last minute purchases from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. They will have a limited number of academic regalia items.

Also on Saturday, the main bookstore in the Davis Center at 590 Main Street will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the Catamount Store on the Church Street Marketplace in downtown Burlington will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

(Class Ring)  How do I order a class ring?

Information packets are available at the Bookstore.  To order a class ring, please contact ArtCarved-Balfour representatives, Paul Trono or Nick Herberg, at 802-658-6126 or by email to paul.trono@balfour-rep.com.

(December or May Ceremonies)  I am planning to participate in the December 2013 Commencement Ceremony, may I also participate in the May 2014 Commencement Ceremony? 

Eligible students may choose to participate in the December or May commencement ceremonies.  Eligible students who choose to participate in the December Commencement Ceremony may not participate in the May Commencement Ceremony.

(Diplomas)  When will I receive my diploma?

Degrees will be conferred by the president at the December Commencement Ceremony.  Diplomas will be mailed in October to students who completed their academic requirements by the end of the summer. Diplomas will be mailed in January to students who completed their academic requirements by the end of the fall semester. Graduates are asked to confirm their post commencement mailing address by updating their permanent address from within myUVM. Questions regarding diplomas should be addressed to the registrar's office 802-656-2045.

(DVD)  Will the December Commencement Ceremony be available on DVD?

Yes, a DVD of the December Commencement Ceremony will be available from the UVM Bookstore for $19.99 plus $7.99 shipping and handling (please allow 4 weeks after the Commencement Ceremony for delivery). Pre-orders may be placed online or at the UVM Bookstore.

(Eligibility)  How do I know if I am eligible to participate in the December Commencement Ceremony?

Eligible students must have completed their degree requirements by the end of the summer semester or be enrolled in fall courses, which if successfully completed would result in satisfying all degree and graduation requirements. This eligibility will be verified after the last day to withdraw from courses has passed. In addition, students who are within six credits of completing all degree requirements and have a plan to complete all remaining requirements may, with the approval of their dean’s office, walk in the December Commencement Ceremony. Invitations will be mailed to all eligible students. Ceremony related communications and RSVP details will be handled electronically through each eligible student’s UVM email account only.

(Flowers - Display)  What happens to the beautiful flower arrangements that decorate the commencement venue?

Many beautiful floral arrangements are used to enhance the stage for commencement. At the end of commencement, these flowers will be donated to local nursing homes so that their beauty may continue to be enjoyed.

(Invitations) I would like to send friends and family members an invitation to the December Commencement Ceremony, how do I receive invitations?

The December Commencement invitation is available to download as a PDF to send to your guests. However, please note, a copy of the commencement invitation or tickets are not necessary to gain entry to the ceremony.

(Latin Honors)  When will I be notified if I have received Latin Honors?

Students participating in the December Commencement Ceremony will be notified if they have received Latin honors in May 2014. Latin honors are not awarded at the December ceremony. Latin honors (summa cum laude, magna cum laude, cum laude) are determined when all grades for seniors have been submitted. The Registrar’s Office will compile the list at the end of the current academic year (May 2014). Students graduating with honors will receive an Honors Medallion and an updated diploma signifying their achievement after the spring semester.

(Mobility Limitations)  A member of my party has mobility limitations. What accommodations are available?

Guests who have mobility limitations may make arrangements for accommodations for parking by completing the online Deaf and Disability Accommodation Request Form.

(Parking)  Where do I park for the December Commencement Ceremony?

Commencement parking is located on the Athletic Campus at the Gutterson Parking Garage near the Patrick Gym/Multipurpose Facility.

(Phi Beta Kappa)  When will I be notified if I have been invited to join Phi Beta Kappa?

Resident members of the UVM Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, The Alpha of Vermont, meet twice annually to elect students to membership in the chapter. After those elections, students are contacted and invited to attend an induction ceremony. Generally, induction ceremonies take place on December 5 and the Saturday morning of Commencement weekend in May. For more information, please visit the Phi Beta Kappa website.

(Photographs)  Will there be a photographer at the December Commencement Ceremony?

GradImages photographed all students that walked at the December Commencement ceremony. To find your commencement proofs, please visit www.gradimages.com and use your last name and school name to locate your account. You can also call the GradImages Customer Service at 800-261-2576 for additional assistance.

University of Vermont Photography took candid photographs of the event.  A photo gallery will be posted on the main page of the December Commencement website shortly after December 14th for review and purchase.

(Reception)  Will there be a reception?

No, there will not be a formal reception following the December Commencement Ceremony. However, light refreshments will be available in the Multipurpose Facility at the end of the ceremony.

(Tickets)  Do I need a ticket to attend the December Commencement Ceremony?

No, tickets are not required to attend the December Commencement Ceremony. Students are asked to RSVP regarding the number of guests they are bringing. RSVPs will be requested by email to the students’s UVM email account and replies will be submitted online.

(Visually Impaired)  A member of my party is visually impaired. What accommodations are available?

Guests who are Visually Impaired may make arrangements for accommodations for parking, amplification, captioning, interpreters, large print or Braille programs by completing the online Deaf and Disability Accommodation Request Form.

(Walk Policy) What is the University’s policy on allowing students to “walk” at commencement?

“Walking” is the term used to indicate student participation in Commencement exercises.  Walking in UVM’s Commencement exercises, however, does not necessarily indicate degree completion or a guarantee thereof.  Only when all requirements are completed will a student’s degree be awarded. Undergraduate students who have completed all degree requirements are eligible to walk in the UVM and College/School Commencement ceremonies.  In addition, undergraduate students who are within six credits of completing all degree requirements and have a plan to complete all remaining requirements may, with the approval of their dean’s office, walk in the UVM and College/School Commencement ceremonies.

(Weather) What happens if there is a severe winter storm?

The December Commencement Ceremony will be held indoors in the Multipurpose Facility on the Athletic Campus. Tickets are not required.  In the event of a severe winter storm that would make travel unsafe, the December Commencement Ceremony will be cancelled. An announcement will be posted on the UVM home page at www.uvm.edu or call (802) 656-3309 or toll free (800) 903-6601 for updates.

(Webcast)  Will there be a live webcast of the December Commencement Ceremony?

Yes, those unable to attend the December Commencement Ceremony may view a live webcast by following the link posted on the university December Commencement website.

In addition, a link to the video recording of the December Commencement Ceremony will be posted on the December Commencement website shortly after December 14.
