Academic Ceremonies - December Commencement
Penrose Jackson, Class of 1970
UVM Alumni Association Board of Directors
Good morning. My name is Penrose Jackson and I am UVM Class of 1970 and I have the privilege of serving as the Vice President of the UVM Alumni Association. It is a pleasure to be here today, as we gather to celebrate your accomplishments on this special occasion. I am sure that many of you are already feeling a little nostalgic, thinking about all that you have experienced at UVM and may even be a little nervous about moving on to the next chapter in your lives. Each of you will chart your own course in the years ahead and accomplish great things.
As you take this next step, know that you are surrounded by an extended family of UVM alumni numbering more than 105,000 strong who stand ready to support you. You will find us nearly anywhere around the globe, making a difference in fields from medicine to education, business, agriculture, journalism, science and technology, engineering and mathematics, environment, the arts, in schools and in hospitals, in large corporations and small businesses, and in non-profits of every description.
We are continuing to build a strong alumni community and network that is always there for you and we encourage you to take advantage of it — whether it’s through the UVM Alumni Association website, the Vermont Quarterly Magazine, or the social media we’ve all become so familiar with . . . facebook, Linkedin, twitter, instagram, and others, or in person at UVM gatherings across the country and around the world to celebrate shared interests or just the common bond of our alma mater.
As a member of our alumni family, we are also pleased to offer you a growing portfolio of benefits and services providing discounts for travel, insurance, credit cards, skiing, restaurants, and much more. And last, but certainly not least, we are in the process of creating a home for you on campus — Alumni House — where a fresh cup of coffee or cocoa awaits you whenever you return to campus.
And as you leave us now, I want to encourage you — please — stay in touch. Continue the connections that you formed here — the friendships you made, the traditions you’ve come to honor, and the many memories that will remain very much a part of you as you go through life. Do come back whenever you can, and especially for your reunion gatherings. The door will always be open to you.
We wish you every success in whatever you undertake, with the help of the excellent education you received here. On behalf of more than 105,000 UVM alumni, congratulations, and welcome — each and every one of you — to our UVM alumni family. To quote the late Humphrey Bogart, “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
