Academic Ceremonies - May Commencement

Samantha Erin Holland, Class of 2013,
Vice President of the Student Government Association

Samantha Holland

Hello, family, friends, faculty, staff, administration, those few people in the back who stopped to see what was going on here, and especially class of 2013. Welcome to this year’s commencement.

I want to first thank everyone who came out here today to support the students graduating. Without you, we truly could have not been as successful as we all are, and for that we owe you greatly. I hear that Burlington Bay is now open, so you should probably get your grads to buy you some maple creemees, I’m sorry, soft serve, for those who aren’t from Vermont. You really can’t go wrong with them.

We did it! That went by so fast. It seems like just yesterday we were moving into our first‑year res hall, anxiously awaiting the roommate who was sure to be a disaster. It’s crazy to think how long it’s been since we went through our first round of class selections. Remember those? Frantically typing in all of those class codes at 7 a.m., then quickly asking our new‑found friends what classes they got into and cursing them under our breath when we found out they took the last spot and the one that we really needed.

And how many times did we experience those crazy hockey games, soak up some sun on the green? UVM has been great to us and time has flown by. Four years ago, we were completely different people from who we are today. Things that mattered so much to us then seem ridiculous now.

Back in the day, we put so much emphasis on one exam or project, it nearly drove us insane. Surely we would be blacklisted from that great job once they found we got that one bad grade in that intro class. Just ask my mom.

Mark Twain once said, “I never let my schooling interfere with education.” Four years after our first college class, we now know, as graduates of UVM, your education is not just in the classroom. It’s so much more. The time we spent outside of the classroom here at UVM is just as important as the time we spent inside.

Today we come together as Catamounts to celebrate the changes in growth we have accomplished and to look ahead at the endless possibilities and opportunities we have created for ourselves and one another. We come together to celebrate all that we have made of ourselves thus far, and all that we will strive to be in the future. So while our schooling may be over, our education is not. It is important that we will never stop searching for new and exciting opportunities to learn and grow, and to be the absolute best versions of ourselves.

I look forward to learning all of the great things UVM class of 2013 achieves and will be forever proud that I am a part of it. Congratulations!
