Academic Ceremonies - Commencement
Ida M. Russin, President of the Staff Council
Staff play an important role in supporting students throughout their time at UVM. We are in the academic departments to help students navigate their majors and we help to create positive living and learning environments. Staff are there to prepare students to be leaders, to help them to understand their own unique identities, and to celebrate their differences. And in many cases, we’ve shared these efforts by working alongside each other.
UVM employs students in a variety of ways. Graduate Students may hold positions as Teaching or Research Assistants, supervised by our inspirational faculty; or they may hold Assistantships working with our outstanding staff and administrators, preparing them well for their professional and academic futures. Undergraduate students have experienced some valuable employment opportunities as well. UVM offers over 3500 jobs to students through the Federal Work-Study program in both on and off-campus positions. UVM also supports non-work-study positions, internships, and other volunteer efforts for students to work with staff.
Staff have come to know and love these student employees. We have helped to teach them how to manage a work schedule, how to get to work on time (you know who you are), how to work with diverse populations, and how caring and committed employees work together. In turn, we have learned a lot from the students, like text- don’t call, and tweet - don’t post! We always enjoy watching them cultivate their futures in this rich environment. We are proud of all UVM students and in particular those student employees for their dedication to the University. On behalf of all of the staff, we would like to extend our congratulations on your achievements today, and I’d like to invite everyone to join me in giving these students a hand for helping to make UVM a great place to learn and work. Thank you.
