Academic Ceremonies - Commencement
Robert F. Cioffi
Chair of the Board of Trustees
On behalf of the UVM Board of Trustees, I welcome you to this joyous occasion.
2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of one of my favorite authors, Mark Twain, and his words still reverberate today. He said and I quote: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.” Endquote.
It turns out that 20 years ago I sat where you are now, hesitant to leave this great university but excited about my future. And I can tell you that the University of Vermont prepared me well to follow Mr. Twain’s advice. While you may miss this spectacular place, your experience here will serve you well as you cast away those bowlines and set sail for whatever comes next.
To the Class of 2010, I offer you our heartfelt congratulations. To the parents, siblings, grandparents, and all other family members and friends who have supported our graduates, spiritually, psychologically, and yes, financially, I want to say Thank You!!
Enjoy every minute of this very special day and…. Go Cats!
