Academic Ceremonies - Commencement
George V. Kidder Outstanding Faculty
Award Recipient Elaine McCrate,
Associate Professor of Economics
Receiving this award is very gratifying for me for a couple reasons. First, because this is UVM, a teaching award is for UVM’s particular kind of teaching. This kind of teaching emphasizes advising students and helping to get them through uncharted intellectual and personal terrain. It also emphasizes the symbiotic relationship of teaching and research. (It’s like breathing: you breathe in and you breathe out, and you can’t imagine doing only one, by itself. Similarly, UVM recognizes that teaching and research are two pieces of the very same process.)
Second, I am especially gratified to receive this award because I was never a “natural” teacher: I had to learn to teach well. After more than 25 years at this institution, it’s nice to know that I got the knack of it.
I’d like to thank the students who have made learning to teach worthwhile. I’d also like to thank the Alumni Association for this award. Many of the alumni and alumnae, including some of my former students, are entrusting your own children to me and the rest of the faculty now. Thank you for your confidence in me.
