UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT SUNDAY COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY MOVED INDOORS; ARTS
AND SCIENCES CEREMONY ALSO INDOORS
Due to an unfavorable weather forecast, the University of Vermont will hold
its commencement ceremony, scheduled for Sunday, on May 20 at 9:00 a.m., indoors.
The ceremony will be held in the Multipurpose Facility at the Athletic Complex..
The ceremony for the College of Arts and Sciences at 2:30 p.m. has also been
moved to the Multipurpose Facility. Ceremonies for UVM’s other colleges
and schools will take place in their originally planned locations. (See
schedule)
In deciding to move both commencement exercises inside, rather than holding
them outdoors on the University Green, the university was responding to five
separate weather forecasts that all predicted a wet and cold day on Sunday.
“We want to make sure students, families, and friends are as comfortable
as possible for this culminating day in their UVM careers,” said UVM President
Daniel Mark Fogel.
Making the call Saturday morning also ensures that set up efforts can get underway
early to make the indoor facility as accommodating as possible. Students, dressed
in cap and gown, will line up for the academic procession at 8 a.m. at the Gardner-Collins
Indoor Track in the Athletic Complex. Faculty will gather in the Varsity Strength
and Conditioning Center (formerly known as the gymnastics facility) at Patrick
Gymnasium.
Seating in the Multipurpose Facility for families and friends of the graduates
will be on a first-come, first-serve basis, and overflow seating in the Patrick
Gym will feature a closed-circuit broadcast of the ceremony. Tickets are not
required.
