Greeting: Julie L. Roberts,
University Marshal and President of the Faculty Senate
Congratulations on your graduation! Just think of the piles of facts, theories, methods, and hypotheses you now carry with you wherever you go from here. Burdened and yet infused by the knowledge you have acquired in the last four or so years, you travel forth and prepare to change the world. Wait. You think you may have forgotten some of this vast treasure trove of expertise we, your UVM faculty, have bestowed? Not a problem, according to Alvin Toffler, who said, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” Of course, I believe Toffler would agree that reading and writing are also essential to learning in the 21st century. But, speaking for your faculty, I not only express my heartfelt pride in your accomplishments but also hope that we send you on as well with the skills necessary to learn, unlearn, and relearn, as your situation demands. That is certainly my wish for you as I congratulate you on this very special day.
