EDFS 209: Introduction to
Research Methods

and research projects. Methods of historical, descriptive,
experimental,
quasi-experimental, field studies, and survey research.”
This
course is intended to enhance participants' knowledge of research for
the purposes of critically evaluating research and preparing
participants to use social science research strategies in their
professional work. As an introductory
research
methods course, participants will explore accepted research practices
beginning
with the
formulation of a research question and following processes through
a review of relevant literature, research
design, data collection, data analysis, and reporting findings.

This
course explores the influences of technology on
schooling and society. Using sociological, historical, and
philosophical
frameworks, course participants consider ways that the
proliferation and
use of information technologies present both challenges and
opportunities for
teachers, learners, and community members. With a particular focus on
changing
roles due to information access, participants collaborate online using
various social networking tools to examine
issues of equity,
cultural
diversity, student empowerment, community relationships, and
opportunities for transforming traditional schooling
practices.
Course objectives align with Vermont State social foundations criteria
for Educational Technology Specialist endorsement.
