Athletics

Although it is generally agreed that the Greeks had a much greater love for athletics than did the Romans, Rome was not without its love of sports. Of course, to many Romans the perfect idea of sport was going to celebratory games and watching gladiators fight to the death, but opinions on that sort of entertainment are normative by definition and I will not intrude apon that.

In addition to the above, Romans did from time to time engage in play of their own. Some of the Roman ball games have remarkably similar modern counterparts. For example, one Roman game is quite similar to modern-day rugby, while another is similar to field hockey. For further information, a reading list has been complied for a Cal class on Ancient Athletics.

A "Classic" hockey team (aka our attempt to get Bill Gates to donate a billion dollars to the Classics Department. Here's to his favorite team! See if you're a fan of the same team as Bill Gates!

Also, Classics being the study of ancient history, how about a little more recent history? Not only the only native-born Vermonter in the NHL, but one of only two UVM Alumni currently playing the NHL, our boy Johnny is as much a Vermont icon as Ben and Jerry's!
