THE TWENTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL VERMONT LATIN DAY:

Agenda for Planning Session

December 6, 2003 481 Main St. /UVM Dept. of Classics Minutes

The meeting began at about 10:00. Present were Philip Ambrose, Karen Budde, Mary Ann Chaffee, Barbara Mieder, Bob Slayton, Cliff Timpson, and Jeanne Valley.

In the discussion of item 2 of the Agenda, it was decided that the Oedipus passage would be the Latin reading suggested for the Juniores and that all three passages would be suggested for those participating in the Certamen. Vocabulary and Annotations would be appended to each passage.

A list of extant tragedies, Greek and Latin with authors and brief synopsis would be included in the Packet. Also included would be a useful bibliography of theater history, dramaturgy, architecture, etc.

Schools would be encouraged in the Packet to include the choruses as a feature of the skit.

Schools would be encouraged to submit for the Individual Displays projects on theater.

Finally, schools would not be expected to include the WHOLE PLAY in the skit. This will be a SKIT, not a PLAY.

Already chosen: Medea (Essex) and Hecuba (Harwood).

Schools would be

The Mini Probatio would be as last year, but teachers situated at the top of the stands, left, right, and center and at the lower part of the stands, left and right, would be given red flags to wave if the question from the Magister is inaudible; further: the Magister will spell out any Latin words and make every effort to make the question both audible and clear.

It was decided NOT to add 5 points to the school whose Praeco answers correctly its question, on the grounds that it was too much a matter of chance.

On item 5, the Vermont Latin Translation Exam, the request was made to ask all participants to state how many years of Latin they have studied.

The reading session in May was welcomed, but no precise date was set.

Other matters: wide ranging discussion of the block system.
