A writing intensive seminar on ancient comedy from its earliest Greek beginnings through the Roman period into the early middle ages. The primary authors are Aristophanes, Menander, Plautus, and Terence. Readings and discussions will include views of Aristotle and Cicero on humor (especially in the Roman court and Senate), political and social satire, as well as "affaires of the heart." The influences on later comedy into the 20th century concludes the course.
