Classics 23: Classical Roman Civilization
(Cross-listed with History [HST] 22)

Covers the approximate period from the end of the Second Punic War to the reign of the emperor Trajan (second century BCE through first century CE), a time when the Romans, despite constant internal political strife, extended their control over the whole of the Mediterranean world. Readings include a basic narratve textbook, a source book for the social history of the period (translated inscriptions, private correspondence, agricultural and medical handbooks), and contemporary political oratory and poetry. There are two hour examinations, a final examination, and a research, historiographical, or creative paper on a subject of each student's choosing, selected after consulation with the instructor.

This course may be used as part of the humanities requirement of the College of Arts and Sciences.

None.
