Classics 221: Hellenistic History

Seminar on the major political and social developments of the period 336-31 BCE: the Greek city-states under Macedonian hegemony, the conquests of Alexander III of Macedon, formation of the Hellenistic kingdoms and imposition of Macedonian/Greek hierarchy on native populations in Asia and Egypt, Greek federal states, relations between the major and minor Hellenistic kingdoms and other political entities, entanglements with Rome and results of either war or accommodation with this growing western Mediterranean power.

Prerequisites:
Junior, senior, or graduate standing AND 12 hours of history.
