Why Get Involved?

SWAT is the perfect organization to be involved in if you:

  • enjoy learning about health issues like sexuality, body image, eating disorders, and alcohol & other drugs
  • like being the "go-to" person when others have questions
  • want to have fun being creative and being involved
  • want to learn how to facilitate discussions and present to audiences

Steps to being a peer health educator

How do I become part of the peer health education program (SWAT)?

STEP 1: Enroll and successfully complete Peer Health Education I: HDFS 055. This is an introduction to college health and peer health education. In this 3 credit class you will learn and get trained on the basics of peer health education. It is a semester-long class that is offered in both the Fall and Spring semesters. A small class size allows for in-depth discussions and active participation.

STEP 2: After you take the introductory course, you are ready to join SWAT! Peer health educators are unpaid positions but receive 3 course credits for each semester they are active members of SWAT. In order to get your course credits, you enroll in HDFS 195: Field Experience in Peer Health Education for 3 credits. This class is offered every semester and can be taken multiple times.

STEP 3: As you are enrolling in HDFS 195, make sure to also submit a Peer Health Educator Application Apply to Join SWAT Now!
