Faculty & Staff Resources

We frequently coordinate with Faculty and Staff by responding to requests for assistance with distressed students, classroom presentations, and answering your questions. As a consultant, our role is to help you determine the best course of action for addressing your concerns. Often Faculty and Staff are in a good position to positively influence students and encourage them to seek help.

At times, when students become depressed, anxious, confused or they are feeling alone, they may turn to you for help, either by speaking directly with you or by giving hints that something is amiss either through writing assignments or by displaying problematic behaviors, such as:

Emotion Distress Indicators, which include

  • Excessive absences from class
  • Crying
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Disruptive behavior
  • Exaggerated or inappropriate emotional reactions
  • Excessive talking or activity

Crisis or Emergent Symptoms requiring professional emergency assistance

  • Suicidal or other self-destructive thoughts/actions
  • Violent or other extremely disruptive behavior (hostile threats, assaults)
  • Loss of contact with reality
  • Disturbed speech

Should a situation arise that you feel requires professional emergency assistance, or if you’re not sure about the severity of the situation,

  • Remain calm
  • Maintain a straight-forward, supportive attitude
  • Be sure someone is with the student should you need to get help
  • Call for assistance
