About The UVM Counseling Center

College can be an exciting and also challenging as you grow into a more independent adult. This is a time for you to figure out who you are, which career to pursue, and how to be in relationships. The Counseling Center is a great place to bring those normal and developmental issues, as well as other more serious emotional and mental concerns.

Counseling sessions are free for full-time UVM students, are confidential, and are typically scheduled once per week for 45-50 minutes. It's important for you to arrive at your appointments on time and to call in advance if you can't attend a session. The UVM Counseling Center works substantially with a short-term therapy model, meaning during your Intake session (1st appointment) you and a Counselor will plan for your therapy. This will include talking about the number of sessions you'll meet, the areas you'll focus on, and perhaps define some goals for counseling. The number of sessions you decide on can vary depending upon several factors. Sometimes clients and their counselor make the decision to end individual counseling so you can attend a Counseling Group. (link to Group Counseling info page)

UVM Counselors are generalists and can work with you regarding any issue(s). Here's a partial list of issues students seek counseling for:

  • Feeling isolated or lonely
  • Eating or Body Image concerns
  • Drugs (prescription / street)
  • Feeling depressed sad
  • Identity concerns
  • Adjusting to the University
  • Missing their family
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Discrimination / Harassment
  • Traumatic events (death of a friend / loved one / pet)
  • Stress / Anxiety
  • Self-esteem
  • Relationships
  • Alcohol
  • Academic difficulties

If you have questions or doubts about the process, please discuss them whenever they arise. If your doubts persist, your counselor will be glad to refer you to another counselor within the Center or in the Burlington community.
