Overview of UVM Chemistry Undergraduate Degree Requirements

Degrees Offered in Chemistry:
Bachelor's of Science Degree (BS)
- Accredited degree with the American Chemical Society
- Focuses more on chemistry and less on liberal arts
- Requires an additional upper level course in chemistry and research credit in chemistry (vs. the BA)
Bachelor's of Arts Degree (BA) – General Concentration
- Very similar to the BS degree, but does not have two extra chemistry degree requirements
- However, a BA degree students may add these two courses to their schedule
- Requires that the College of Arts and Sciences BA degree requirements be met:
- Complete all 7 areas of liberal arts study, including a foreign language
- Requires a minor
Either the BS or the BA (general concentration) degree prepares students for graduate study in chemistry or a variety of related disciplines
Bachelor's of Arts Degree (BA) – Biomolecular Concentration
- Requires chemistry core courses, but does not require the depth of chemistry courses as per the BS or BA (general) degrees
- Adds coursework in the biological sciences
- Often used as a major to prepare for a postgraduate medical degree program
Bachelor's of Arts Degree (BA) – Environmental Concentration
- Requires chemistry core courses, but does not require the depth of chemistry courses as per the BS or BA (general) degrees
- Adds coursework in environmental sciences
- Used as preparation for beginning a career in environmental science
