Common Ground Student-Run Educational Farm
Dr. Buddy Tignor, Plant and Soil Science's new professor in Vegetables came aboard as another advisor. Student manager was Nate Sands (ENVS) supported by Brain Postlewaite (Grad-GEOG), Craig Coistion (ENVS), Yarrow Collins (Nutrition), Brad Kintzer and apprentice Julia Moore (ENVS). Shares increased to 26. Goals for the 2000 season included increasing the vegetable quality improved farmer communication and increase student participation and donations. They donated around 5500 pounds of fresh organic vegetables were donated to the Chittenden Co. Emergency Food shelf and Salvation Army Soup Kitchen.
Students in cooperation with Friends of the Horticulture Farm gave a workshop titled "Vegetable Gardening Workshop for Kids." Other visitors included Dr. Ron Sonoda, a professor emeritus in Plant Pathology at the University of Florida, and Tulio De Melo, an EMBRAPA Vegetable Specialist from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food supply in Brazil visited Common Ground. Both raved about the great opportunity that Common Ground was for our students.
CALS' Dean of students John Bramley visited the farm in September after which he made a personal contribution to support the farm.
