Common Ground Student-Run Educational Farm
The Friends for the Horticulture Farm generously provided seed money for the 1996-growing season. Students quickly realized that they needed to work with an economic model that could help them provide a working income for the farm. They chose to use the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), subscription farm model, where customers pay a set fee at the beginning of the season before receiving cultivated vegetable through the summer.
They made the season decision to have their shareholders be from the on-camps community to minimize our competition with other farmers in the area and the Intervale CSA in Burlington. The remainder of the produce went to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf. They had 7 shareholders with the help of Bryan Connolly, a Botany student, and farm manager for the 1996 growing season.
