Fulfilling Dreams for the First Generation College Student (CDI Conference)

Time: 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Location: Silver Maple Ballroom, Davis Ctr.
Description: Conference Goal:
To enable faculty, students and community practitioners to deepen their capacity to contribute to the experiences and successes of diverse first generation college students.

Conference Format:
Opening plenary and informal breakout sessions on topics such as: identity formation, academic readiness, mentoring, and family perspectives that address the critical dimensions of achieving higher education given the educational, economic, and language barriers that first generation college students experience. Special student panels and/or facilitators.

Sponsored by the UVM College of Education and Social Services (CESS) Faculty Committee on Diversity Initiatives and Dean's Office. In Collaboration with: Community partners including the Burlington School District, the Vermont Department of Education, the Burlington Police Department, Vermont Multicultural Alliance for Democracy, Howard Center, King Street Center, Connecting Cultures/NESTT, Agency of Human Services’ Refugee Office, the Center for World Education, and the Center for Cultural Pluralism.

Description: Please join us for a focus group discussion about ways to facilitate interdisciplinary work around STEM, provide outreach to K-12 STEM Education in Vermont, and/or discuss new STEM grant opportunities. Our goal is to envision ideas for STEM education initiatives on campus and consider novel ways to collaborate on existing and new STEM projects and initiatives at UVM.

The keynote will offer useful insights on the positions and "stages" students' exhibit when the topic of racial identity becomes a focal point in the context of everyday class discussions, assignments, readings and interactions. His research is based on racial identity development.

Conference on Indigenous VT Culture and Tradition

We will introduce you to a just-created interactive “virtual museum” of Indigenous Vermont artifacts and unpublished documents and to new ways of thinking and teaching about Indigenous Vermont culture and history.

Applications for the Classroom:
Participants will contribute to the development of an Indigenous-based and place-based strategic model of learning in the classroom.

Conference attendees will receive a DVD including the music, imagery, and written materials introduced in the conference for implementation in the classroom, as well as an outline of a state-of-the-art native-based epistemological structure to interpret it to Vermont students.

Enter the foyer of Governor's Mansion (the building to the left of the main inn entrance), and take the stairs at the right of the foyer to the ballroom. The Ballroom can also be accessed by entering at the main inn entrance, and taking the stairs to the left of the lobby downstairs to the tunnel that connects the main inn to the ballroom. If you need accessible access to the ballroom, please check in at the front desk in the main entrance and they will direct you.

Coffee and tea will be available at 8:00 and a continental breakfast break will be provided around 10:30.

All presenters/speakers requiring A/V should email their materials to George.Leibowitz@uvm.edu in advance. A PC laptop and microphone, projector and screen will be available for presentations. Presentation materials will be emailed to participants after the meeting.
